Bwindi is however most notable for her 340 Mountain Gorillas, about half the world\\\’s population of this critically endangered primate. Gazetted in 1991, the park rose to her peak after Gorilla tracking became a tourist activity in April of 1993, converting it into one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth. The 7 habituated families include Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura near Buhoma and the Nkuringo group.
Activities include: Gorilla tracking, Forest walks, Cultural visits with the Batwa people and unbelievable bird watching – this is Africa’s richest country birds-wise with over 1,000 species recorded including almost half the continent’s known species and over 10% of those recorded around the world. Day 3
Wake up and prepare for the unforgettable experience! After an early breakfast transfer to the park HQs for pre-Gorilla tracking briefing and about the gorilla family you will track then 09:00 AM: set off into the forest in the footsteps of the Mountain Gorillas. The time taken in the footsteps of these humble apes is un-predictable; it can be anything from 3 hours to an entire day depending their previous day nesting and subsequent movement. The trek itself, climbing up and down through steep forested rocks, can be exhausting but the thrill of coming face to face with these giant primates, and spending an hour with them as they go about their daily life, more than makes up for the time taken in their search. En-route, please be sure to enjoy a rich variety of birdlife and other primates – the red tailed monkey, black and white Colobus monkey, velvet monkey and the grey cheeked Mangabeys.
NB: There is a minimum age limit for gorilla tracking which is strictly 15 years.
While the adults are gorilla tracking, the bellow 15 year old Children can take a guided cultural walk to visit the Batwa pygmy tribe. These are diminutive former hunter/gatherers, the largest part of the community live around Buhoma in Bwindi and they used to live in this forest, deriving their every livelihood from it. They were evicted when it was gazetted as a national park and now live on its fringes. Local tribesmen will engage you in their traditional way of life like making fire from sticks and grass, laying traps for wild animals and shooting with bows and arrows.
Afterwards trek back to the lodge for lunch and a refreshing shower. Spend your afternoon at leisure GORILLA FOREST CAMP (FB)
