Think you know Africa? Think again.
When most travelers dream of an African safari, they picture the endless golden plains of the Maasai Mara or the Serengeti. And yes those places are spectacular. But there’s another East African gem that remains beautifully under the radar.
Uganda.
Sandwiched between Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the “Pearl of Africa” is a lush, green, mountainous country that offers something the savannahs cannot: face-to-face encounters with endangered mountain gorillas, playful chimpanzees, and the rare golden monkey all within a single trip.
And here’s the secret we share with our guests at Taste Africa Safaris: you can pair Uganda with neighboring Rwanda for an even richer primate experience.
Let us tell you why.
1. Gorilla Trekking: Uganda vs. Rwanda
Both countries offer world-class gorilla trekking, but each has its own flavor.
Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest)
Permit cost: $800 (more affordable)
Experience: Denser, wilder jungle. Steeper hikes. A true adventure feel.
Gorilla families: Over 20 habituated groups
Best for: Travelers on a moderate budget who want raw, untamed trekking
Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park)
Permit cost: $1,500 (luxury experience)
Experience: Slightly easier terrain. Shorter drives from Kigali.
Gorilla families: 12 habituated groups
Best for: Luxury travelers or those short on time
Our advice at Taste Africa Safaris?
If budget allows, trek in both countries. Each experience is unique. But if you want value and adventure, Uganda is unbeatable.
2. Chimpanzee Tracking: Kibale Forest
Let’s be honest gorillas get all the fame. But chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, are equally fascinating.
Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda has the highest density of primates in East Africa. You’ll track habituated chimp communities through ancient rainforest, listening to their loud pant-hoot calls before you even see them. And when you do? Expect drama, playfulness, and a shocking resemblance to human behavior.
Quick tip: Book your chimpanzee permit early they sell out months in advance.
3. Golden Monkeys: The Hidden Gem
Most travelers come for gorillas and leave without ever hearing about the golden monkey. That’s a mistake.
These striking, orange-backed primates live only in the Virunga Mountains (shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC). You can trek them in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda) or Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) .
The golden monkey trek is shorter, less strenuous than gorilla trekking, and absolutely magical. Watching them leap through bamboo forests is like witnessing a circus performance choreographed by nature.
4. Beyond Primates: The Big 5 & More
We love primates but we’d never send you home without seeing the classic African wildlife.
In Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park and Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, you can spot:
Lions (including Uganda’s famous tree-climbing lions in Ishasha)
Leopards
Elephants
Buffalo
Rhinos (in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary or Akagera)
Throw in a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel where hundreds of hippos grunt and splash just meters from your boat and you’ve got a safari that rivals any in Africa.
