The official age limits established by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) state that the minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years old, while the minimum age for chimpanzee tracking is 12 years old
However, If we coordinate with the child’s parents, Taste Africa Safaris can write directly to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to request permission for an underage child to trek. UWA will only approve if the child is physically capable and safe to do the trek. Start this process early so we have time to handle the paperwork and secure the permit before your travel dates.
Age Limits Overview
Primate Experience
| Minimum Age Limit | Maximum Age Limit |
Mountain Gorilla Tracking | 15 years old | None (Based on physical fitness) |
Chimpanzee Tracking | 12 years old | None (Based on physical fitness) |
Why Are These Age Restrictions Enforced?
The Uganda Wildlife Authority strictly enforces these rules at all briefing gates across Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Kibale National Park for three major reasons
- Disease Prevention: Humans share over 98% DNA with chimpanzees and 97% with mountain gorillas. Children are more susceptible to common communicable diseases like coughs, flu, and colds, which can be fatal to wild primate populations.
- Trek Difficulty: Mountain terrains feature steep, dense, and muddy paths. The hikes can range from 2 to 8 hours, which requires immense physical stamina and endurance.
- Unpredictable Behavior: Wild primates communicate using complex vocalizations and body language. Children may panic, make sudden loud noises, or run if a silverback or chimpanzee makes a sudden movement, which can trigger defensive behaviors from the animals
Travel Alternatives for Younger Children
If you are planning a family trip with children under the age limits, Taste Africa Safaris can arrange alternative eco-activities to keep them fully engaged at the lodge or around the park boundaries while the adults track.
The UWA Junior Ranger Program offers supervised activities, including:
- Guided Short Nature Walks: Easy, flat terrain walks looking for butterflies and birds.
- Cultural Village Visits: Traditional craft-making, pottery workshops, and storytelling with community elders.
- Art and Painting: Creative sessions focused on drawing local wildlife and forest landscapes
Important Permit Requirements
To verify age compliance, you must present your original physical passport at the park briefing station on the morning of your trek. The park rangers will cross-reference your passport data against your pre-booked digital primate permit
